Evolution Korea Until recently the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with creationists, afraid that it could boost the credibility of the group. However, silence is no any longer an option. The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is only one example of how the development paradigm has changed. What is Evolution? The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. The term”transmutation” was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into other species in a gradual and predictable manner. In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to the next generation. Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. While not all creationists are Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists. The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently. OECs are not as well-known However, they are as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth. Both kinds of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and also special creation and consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” This is also referred to as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of the created species.” The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows these to evolve over time. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory by taking away instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next goal is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution. STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States. The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today. On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
